PCB Conference

one day conference for state pollution control boards on pollution prevention at source – green chemistry and green engineering approach for pollution control boards

Background & Objectives

Over the years, the IGCW Convention & Ecosystem have consecutively integrated an exclusive session on Green Chemistry & Engineering for the State Pollution Control Boards during 3rd IGCW-2013 and 4th IGCW-2015. These PCB Conferences have been attended by the Senior Environment Engineers of State PCBs including Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Punjab, Goa, Arunachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu & Karnataka.

Globally, the chemical communities and regulatory bodies are increasingly recognizing that Green Chemistry & Engineering (GC&E) based practices help in preventing environmental pollution at its source by minimizing and / or eliminating the hazards of chemical feed-stocks, reagents, solvents, and products.

Green chemistry is the design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances. Green chemistry applies across the life cycle of a chemical product, including its design, manufacture, use, and ultimate disposal. Green chemistry, also known as sustainable chemistry:

  • Prevents pollution at the molecular level
  • Is a philosophy that applies to all areas of chemistry, not a single discipline of chemistry
  • Applies innovative scientific solutions to real-world environmental problems
  • Results in source reduction because it prevents the generation of pollution
  • Reduces the negative impacts of chemical products and processes on human health and the environment
  • Lessens and sometimes eliminates hazard from existing products and processes
  • Designs chemical products and processes to reduce their intrinsic hazards

The overall objective in integrated waste management is to avoid disposal and, therefore, to proceed up the hierarchy in order, ultimately, to eliminate as much waste as possible in order to minimise the environmental impact. For chemical processes the principles of green chemistry can be applied to all options of the waste hierarchy and this approach is an integral part of the waste management system.

Objectives of State Pollution Control Board Conference on Green Chemistry & Engineering during 5th IGCW-2017 are:

  • To introduce to the Member Secretaries the emerging field of GC&E for preventing / minimizing hazardous pollution at the source of its generation.
  • To familiarize the State PCB officials with various regulatory initiatives & approaches on Green Chemistry integration by other parts of the world like USA, UK and Europe
  • To provide a conducive platform for sharing their thoughts, ideas and experiences and thereby, learn from each other’s initiatives
  • To get connected to ‘Green Chemistry’ based environmental solution providers and experts.
